Bi-sexual: Definition & Differences

picture

Bi sexuality. Chances are, it’s a term you’ve heard thrown around, especially in recent years, but what exactly is the true bisexual meaning? Is there a specific bi-sexual definition, or rather is bisexual attraction a spectrum? In a sense, it’s both! As the LBGT community becomes more outspoken than before, there is a lot of new information for people to learn. Unfortunately, it can be extremely hard to keep up with the ever-changing lingo and terms when it comes to gender identity or sexual preferences. However, throughout this article, we’ll be taking a close look at bisexuality (and also comparing it to pansexuality!), so hopefully, you’ll gain a better understanding of the differences and nuances of this specific sexual preference.

Although there isn’t anything that can be truly defined as bisexual behavior, generally speaking, bisexual means someone who is attracted to both genders. Interestingly enough, the bisexual definition (aka what’s bisexual) can change depending on who you’re talking to, so bisexuality could also mean romantic attraction to both genders or even attraction to other genders (such as transgender people). However, singles who are attracted to men, females, and trans people usually aren’t considered to fall under bi-sexuality; rather, they’re considered pansexual, which is the attraction to people regardless of their choice of gender identity.

The bisexual background and culture are very similar to gay culture yet remain distinctly different within the LBGT community. So bisexual…. What does it mean? For the purposes of this article, the bi-sexual meaning is a person who’s attracted to both men and women, not all genders. Of course, men can be bi, but what about women? Is the bisexual women meaning different from bi men? Actually, it’s not! Although women are more likely to experiment with the same gender than men are, bisexual define by gender attraction, not by the gender of the individual in question. However, just because a woman has fooled around with both women and men doesn’t automatically mean she’s bi. To be considered as such, she has to have a sexual and/or romantic attraction to both genders, although the attractions don’t have to be equal.

Bisexual: What Does It Mean?

picture

We’ve already come up with a bisexuality definition: attraction to both genders is the definition of bisexual person, but remember how we also hinted at a bisexuality spectrum? This is extremely important when you’re trying to define bisexuality: no one is actually one hundred percent straight or one hundred percent gay! However, by definition, bisexual people have a significant attraction to both genders (to the point where they would sexually engage with them), but that doesn’t mean these attractions are equal.

Using this definition of bi sexual, a man who primarily slept with women but still enjoyed occasional sex with men would be bi. By the same definition for bisexual, a woman who usually slept with men but often hooked up with women as well would also be bi. However, here’s an important part of bisexuality explained: they don’t need to be sexually active with both genders to be bisexual! As such, a man who enjoyed being with men but was in a long-term relationship with a woman would still be bi, despite his “standard” relationship. The same thing is true in reverse: a woman who was in a long-term relationship with a woman but still enjoyed the company of men would also be considered bi.

The same is true for sex that’s true for relationships: the genders of the parties involved don’t have any actual effect or influence on a person’s sexuality. For bisexuals, sex is just another action in otherwise ordinary life: their sexual preferences remain open whether or not their partner is the same or opposite-gendered. This is why sexuality is so hard to define: bisexual is just one of the many sexual orientations (and more are created every day as the current orientations are subdivided!).

Bisexual Women: Meaning & Differences

As we’ve gone over in the article so far, the definition of bisexuality is an attraction to both genders. This remains the same for females and males; the meaning of bisexual doesn’t change. Therefore, a woman who is bisexual may find herself attracted to men & women, although she most likely won’t stick to just one gender. In terms of sexuality, bisexual women are actually quite liberated since the simple fact that they’re women gives them a better chance at getting with both genders than bi men have. What bisexual women prefer will change on an individual basis. For some ladies, the answer to “what does bisexual mean?” could be women in the week and men on the weekend. For others, it might be the polar opposite or even an even split between the genders!

So, do the sexual relation rules change for women? What does bisexual sex constitute? Actually, there isn’t such a thing! Sex is just sex—the sexual orientation of the individuals involved is still irrelevant, even if both partners are women. The word bisexual mean that the lady in question can swing both ways, so even if she’s currently having sex with a woman, she could also have sex with a man later on.
